The Complete Guide to Data Engineering in 2026
What data engineers do, ETL vs ELT, the core skills (SQL, Python, modelling, Spark, Airflow, cloud) and a practical way to start learning.
What is data engineering?
Data engineering is the work of building the systems that collect, move, store and prepare data so that analysts, data scientists and AI applications can use it. If data science is about asking questions of data, data engineering is about making sure the right data arrives — clean, on time and at scale.
This guide explains what data engineers do, the core skills and tools, how the role differs from data science and analytics, and how to start learning.
What data engineers do day to day
- Build pipelines that pull data from apps, databases, APIs and files, and load it into a warehouse or lake.
- Transform data into clean, well-modelled tables that analysts and dashboards can trust.
- Orchestrate and schedule jobs so data refreshes reliably every hour or every night.
- Monitor data quality — catch missing rows, duplicates, schema changes and late data before anyone builds a report on it.
- Optimise cost and performance of queries and storage in the cloud.
- Support AI systems — preparing training data, feature pipelines and the document pipelines behind RAG applications.
ETL vs ELT
In ETL (extract, transform, load), data is cleaned before it is loaded into the warehouse. In ELT, raw data is loaded first and transformed inside the warehouse using SQL — the more common pattern today with cloud warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift and Databricks.
Core skills
1. SQL — the foundation
Every data engineer writes a lot of SQL: joins, aggregations, window functions, CTEs and incremental loads. If you learn one thing first, make it SQL. Our SQL for Data Analysis guide is a good starting point.
2. Python
Python is used for scripting, calling APIs, processing files and writing pipeline logic. Pandas covers small and medium data; distributed tools handle large volumes.
3. Data modelling
Designing tables that are easy to query: fact and dimension tables (star schema), slowly changing dimensions and clear naming. Good modelling makes every downstream report simpler.
4. Distributed processing
Apache Spark processes large datasets across many machines using DataFrames and Spark SQL. You don't need it for every job, but it is common in larger companies.
5. Orchestration
Tools such as Apache Airflow schedule pipelines as DAGs (directed acyclic graphs), manage dependencies and retries, and alert when something fails.
6. Cloud platforms
Most data platforms run on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure. Learn the basics of object storage (S3, GCS, Azure Blob), a cloud warehouse and identity and access permissions.
7. Engineering habits
Version control with Git, testing, documentation and writing code other people can maintain matter as much as any single tool.
Data engineer vs data scientist vs data analyst
- Data analysts answer business questions with SQL, Excel/Power BI and Python, and build dashboards.
- Data scientists build statistical and machine learning models and run experiments.
- Data engineers build and maintain the pipelines and platforms the other two depend on.
Many people start as data analysts — which builds strong SQL and data-modelling skills — and then move towards data engineering or data science. Read our comparison of Data Analyst vs Data Scientist vs ML Engineer.
A typical career path
Junior Data Engineer → Data Engineer → Senior Data Engineer → Staff or Principal Data Engineer, or a move into data engineering management or data architecture. Pay varies widely with company, city and skills, so research current listings for roles you are interested in rather than relying on averages.
How to start learning
- Get strong at SQL and Python — this is where most beginners should spend their first months.
- Learn data modelling — design a small star schema for a sales dataset.
- Build a mini pipeline — pull data from a public API on a schedule, clean it and load it into a database.
- Add orchestration and tests — run it with a scheduler and add data-quality checks.
- Try a cloud warehouse using a free tier, and document your project on GitHub.
